The Divine Eye of Reason

For tens of thousands of years
we lived little better than animals,
stagnant in the thrall of ignorance and fear.

500 years ago, we opened the divine eye of Reason,
and went from cave dwellers to moon walkers.

Galileo and Newton began a search
for the mathematical mark
of divinity in our universe.
It led to the Enlightenment,
and to mastery over a planet.

We cured disease, extended life,
read the genetic code, explored the moon and planets,
mastered the skies, plumbed the oceans,
lifted billions from abject poverty.
We have decoded the mathematical patterns
hidden in the very fabric of Creation.

Can this power be anything but divine?

Would the Creator who bestowed this gift
have us blind our eyes now?

After seeing so much and so far,
go back to dark ages now?

No!

We cannot turn back from Reason.
It is part of the divine light,
guiding humankind to transcendence.

Reason nourishes spirituality,
as spirituality nourished Reason
during the bloom of the Enlightenment.
